Interesting Open Question

This question is sure to raise many interesting arguments:

"Should the Bible be classified as 'Historical Fiction'?"

In my opinion the bible is fiction. (One of the greatest stories ever written!)- Tho whether or not it was based upon actual events is debatable!

But seriously.... turning water into wine? Give him my number! lmao

*waits for the lightening to strike*

Historical fiction my arse. Do some reading, in regard to the new testament many archeological digs have proven that alot of the verse written by the disciples can be verified. Boo ya!

Hey mate, haven't talked to you since you went over!

How's things over there? You would not believe how bad our soccer team is without you. We SUCK. We haven't won a game since you left (not even against the Blues!!!) Bring on 2008 so you can play for us again and we can UNSUCK.

My 10 cents on the topic:

The bible is historically very accurate, and remarkably cohesive considering the number of contributing authors spanning several centuries. It explains the world and human nature in an amazing way.

It's message is difficult, confronting and many reject it. Having weighed up various arguments for and against it (scientific, moral, spiritual) I've come to believe that it is true, and I have decided to follow Jesus and his teachings.

Hope you're having fun over there mate, we do miss you!

....I think here the term 'historical fiction' needs to be defined. Isn't it that the author is not asking did Jesus, his desciples and others exist... or whether or not we should believe the messages within the Bible...but is it a collection of stories (for want of a better word) based on historical facts?

Even if it is true that "a lot of the verse written by the disciples can be verified" how are we to know if the exact version of events - and the stories of individual people's lives - occurred exactly as is told in the Bible?

Good points kristy.

History is an inexact science - we rely on the recounting and reporting of the people who were there - eyewitness accounts passed down through oral tradition, or recorded like the bible.

We either have to take the authors at their word and believe that it happened just as they wrote it, or decide not to believe them.

The thing that really swayed it for me is that the guys who wrote the New Testament each had the opportunity to renounce what they had written, or admit to making it up.

All 12 disciples/apostles underwent torture, execution or exile (or some combination thereof) rather than take a backward step.

They lived every day for years with Jesus, and they were convinced about him and his message enough to die for it. He obviously made an impact on them, and that was one of the things that really drew me into studying it further.

I think I like the hope and comfort that religions give to people but I hate the interpretation of events/requriements and and control that it gives some people.
